The web-based risk calculators use equations developed by the VAREANZ research team to calculate a risk score. These provide clinicians with an individual estimate of a person’s chance of having a cardiovascular disease event in the next five years.
We provide two calculators for use among people without prior CVD or equivalent very high vascular risk – one for the general population that includes any person with or without diabetes, and a second equation specifically for people with Type 2 diabetes.
NZ CVD Risk - General population
This calculates a 5-year absolute risk of CVD for people without a history of known CVD, heart failure, or substantial renal impairment (HISO standard).

R code for calculating an individual’s CVD risk score is available: Download code
NZ CVD Risk - Type 2 diabetes population
This calculates a 5-year absolute risk of CVD for people with Type 2 diabetes and without known CVD, heart failure, or substantial renal impairment.
Published in the Lancet (Pylypchuck et al. 2021).

NZ Risk - Bleeding risk and CVD risk
This calculates both a 5-year absolute risk of CVD and of major bleeding for people without a history of atherosclerotic CVD.
